Description

A scene illustrating a few aspects of the rulers of the human race, along with nearly a third of the Milky Way galaxy...

Mandrakes, evolved from highly derived tree-dwelling maniraptorians, have proven to be a tremendously successful species of iUniverse. They spread across several dozen systems before the advent of the nexus. They fit into the catagory of social carnivores. Many mandrakes societies vent their bloodlust through traditional hunting, duels, ritualistic cannibalism, and mercenary wars of other races. The steriotypical nemisis of the mandrake is the arcu. Both races find battle with the other most entertaining. Mandrakes have been given hunting rights to most any species (especialy sophonts) who need, desire, or demand it. They are renowned by most other races as deadly hunters. There are a number of mandrake species and subspecies due to their early widespread and dissconnected empires before the nexus, and they have become more diverse than ever in modern times with truely advanced bio-engineering and adaptech.

The scene above depicts a representation of a high-ranking mandrake family, the Sak'araa. The Sak'araa family businesses and Incoorporations dominate the trade of jovian fuels in their native system. With three jovians and 51 terrestrial moons at their disposal, they can afford various recreations for themselves and to those willing to take a challange for it.
The middle character represents one of the more obscure personalities of the family. He is classified as a 'mod', for he has modified his physical form to a great extent. His skin is featherless, his neck sports quills, and his teeth are cybornetic metals. He carries an antimatter sword, used in ritual combats on the fighting moon. He also carries a prod (in a pocket of his own skin) for the slaves.
The slave in the scene is a post human. He has been given a slightly cold-blooded metabolism. He uses the sail on his back to warm up for the day's work of tending the agriculture for the livestock (some of which are imported terran dinosaurs, some of which are imported creatures of other biospheres, and some of which are other post humans, including himself). The third character, at the back, is another Sak'araa. She is a bit more typical than her aformentioned cousin. She sports a more inconspicuous modification. Her feathers are photonic nanotech devices that promote invisibility (please look to the internet for the various ideas on how invisibility works, I hadn't the time).
Both cousins are highly trained and skilled in combat with a variaty of species, and may get a new chance of glorious battle very soon. The robot drone, seen in the upper-left, has informed them that a pack of arcu have entered the system requesting a duel in exchange for hunting permits to Hareves (a planet some galactic arms away, known for its population of suicidal tou'houl whizzards). They will hunt them well...

So, all humans are now the subjects of Mandrakes, or are there some polities of free humans?
