Hello, and a Happy New Year to you all! As my first deviation of the new year, I’d like to make it special by featuring the gift-aliens that OblivionJunky94 has created for me, all of which were last year. I’ve done my own take on the designs, so hope that’s okay with you, OJ. Alright then, here we go…
Yamalam: The Yamalam race, despite their seemingly placid technological progress, are an ancient and wizened people who have overcome most of their negative traits. Originally from the planet Alamrahmanla, they evolved along the coastlands of their large world around 60 million years ago. Their world had been badly damaged in the Last Omniscide War only a few million years before, and was still in the process of healing itself when the first Yamalam ancestors began to show signs of emerging sophonce. In hindsight, it may have been the disastrous event itself that set the Yamalam’s ancestors on the road to intelligence. Yamalams themselves are a crab-like species, adapted to their homeworld’s heavy gravity, numerous coastal regions and swamps, and the rhythms of the large tides caused by two moons. They are hexapods, scuttling about on four legs, while the fore-pair serve as hands with five tentacles. They possess both gills and lung-like sacs beneath their armored back, but can also absorb gases and nutrients through their skin. Beneath the skin lies the skeleton, which is itself hollow to support a sub-skeletal system of hydraulic muscles. Their head bears the mouthparts and retractable eyestalks. As hermaphrodites, they spawn only under very specific conditions, with impregnated individuals giving birth to a few aquatic larvae at a time. Although initially a very superstitious race, the complex tides they lived with daily also made them aware that all things have cycles and changes to them. Today, most Yamalams remain adverse to most technology, allowing other races to take them to new habitats in exchange for their collective wisdom and mystical psellular properties.
Daxijana D’ja: Hailing from the low gravity world of Ijkallija, the highly social and carnivorous Daxijana D’ja, or “Daxies” for short, have become valued allies and members of many alliances in and around their sector of the universe. The ancestors of the Daxi race were brachiating hunters of the tall forest canopies, using their lengthy arms to perform advanced acrobatics in pursuit of prey. As the climate of their world changed, and the forests vanished, the early Daxies became running predators. Their neatly folded arms would unravel to quickly snatch up small animals to bring them to the mouth, where the harpoon-like tongue would suck the prey until it was a husk. Daxies have very acute vision and camouflage abilities. With concentration, a specially trained Daxi is able to “bend” their vision around corners. They use color-changing skin, especially around the face and chest, in modern society to express emotions and heritage. The triple-tipped tail contains pheromone glands used in more subtle messages. Daxies otherwise communicate vocally in a complex language produced by twin nostrils at the top of their heads. It is the male who becomes impregnated in reproduction. Although much of their history is violent, most modern Daxies work well among each other and other species. To vent their aggressive habits, many Daxies participate in extreme sports which most other species would find fatal, thanks to natural and technologically-enhanced regeneration.
Lookarah: One of the most stable and peaceful of natural races, the Lookarah have adapted and spread to many sectors of the universe. Their cultural development on their homeworld, Scusal, may have progressed quite slowly, but their graceful nature earned them a quick flowering into Cosmic Civilization, 13 million years ago. What makes the Lookarah most interesting, and perhaps the reason they’re so naturally environmentally aware, is their reproduction cycle. They go through an Alteration of Generations cycle in which one generation bears haploid chromosomes, while the next is diploid. The diploid form of the Lookarah is actually a tree, which photosynthesize with red, hexagonal leaves. The haploid form, the animal form, is a hexapodal, intelligent being. In this form, they are omnivorous and social, with two genders. The tree-forms grow new infant animal-forms over time underground. Adult animal-forms care for the new infants while searching for a suitable mate and territory. Once the male has “pollinated” the female, she will bear an egg-fruit, while will be buried in new territory and grow into a new tree-form. Animal-form Lookarah see with a visor-like set of photoreceptors, and are very sensitive to the presence of water and atmospheric changes with their antennae. Many of their emotions are based on weather patterns, each type of which many cultures hold different ceremonies for. Both forms incorporate silicate glass crystals into their biology, forming protective layers on and beneath their skins. Modern Lookarah communities can have very extensive family forests, and they have many rituals for preserving and encouraging understanding and peace between peoples.Bah Ull: The small race of burrowers, evolved on the world of Thren Leh, is the Bah Ull. For many centuries, these people fought many wars amongst one another for control over the large planet’s one and only sea, Gru Neh. As their First Contect drew near, however, it became apparent that the precious water was more than it seemed. The sea of Gru Neh was actually a single intelligent entity; its intelligence derived from the collective concentrations of metal-rich compounds and veritable soup of organic molecules. At First Contact with this super-entity, now an Ultra, and with Cosmic Civilization, the Bah Ull were changed into the race of hardy and respectable explorers they are known as today. As their world was hot and arid, Bah Ull are natural diggers and most active at dawn and dusk. Their eyes are large enough to see within their tunnels and on the surface in pitch darkness. Their sensitive antennae and three tentacles let them feel their way through their homes and to use tools. Their eyes are protected by a thick, flexible membrane that changes shape to express emotions. Their vocal language is spoken in a series of grunts and sighs. Much of their bodies are covered in armor, especially their backs, heads, and forearms. Those arms and claws are their main excavating tools. The tail does not contain any real bones, but is really a storage of fatty segments that grows over time. It can be shed to act as a food resource. Even today, Bah Ull cultures are often very reverent of water and emphasize that careful observation, study, and respect are necessary for a healthy relationship with others.
Hmmm, how does this vision "bending" thing work? Your creativity always come up with things that makes me more curious than when I started reading the texts.
The Lookarah is another great favourite, especially with their part-plant life cycle. I can imagine the challenges regarding migration, since their babies can only be born in fertile soil. I like the word "egg-fruit" and the weird anatomy it implies, I picture it looking like a hybrid between a pomegranate seed and a shark-egg.
That the Lookarahs emotions are based on the weather is another curiosity I wonder about. How are the Lookarahs weather-feelings different from how weather affects the mood of humans?
And what do you mean with "glass crystals", that their skins biochemical structure include both amorphous and symmetrical molecule arrengements in a blended mix?
You come up with the most interesting creatures and back stories.
Indeed they are.
Sorry, but I can't say I'd take requests now, but I'll post a journal soon indicating when I would.
