Description

The dk'dk are a cosmically restricted yet thriving species inhabiting just two natural planets, Aus, their homeworld, and Nema, teraformed 568 B.Z. They have also created a artificial solar system composed of binary blue stars surrounded by several rings, and twelve articifial worlds. They are an old species, who constructed their first civilization 8 million years ago. They have highly advanced defensive systems which kept them safe in the periods of turmoil from 0-1500 A.Z.
The dk'dk homeworld, Aus, has very low gravity which allows for a monopedal body plan like theirs. Dk'dk are about 4 1/2 feet tall with worm-like bodies topped with a multisensory package. They are "vertebrates" with a complex and flexible spinocord system. They pocess a long, hoof-like toe at the end of their bodies which they use to stand on. They breath through a system of spiracls which runs along a highly advanced lateral line. This lateral line is also a part of an internal balance system. The spiracls also act as hearing organs. The structure at the top of the body has many functions, including sensing, feeding, manipulation, and reproduction. Outwardly, it acts as a highly developed photoreceptor. But it also functions as a heming device. Heming is a sense which incorporates light waves as sound to the nervous center. Dk'dk communicate with heming by rapidy changing the color and pattern of their "eye", they also communicate through sound by a seris of rapid clicks. From the center of the "eye" is a retractible proboscis which dk'dk use to feed, reproduce, and manipulate obfects. Dk'dk feed primarily on gelberry plants as well as occasional sonotrophs, molds, and small insectiods Dk'dk are hermaphrodetic, yet pocess two sexes. The bimale and paramale both pocess sperm and eggs, but fertilize each other in different ways. Dk'dk have a one-way reproductive track. They give birth to live, presocial young through a chloacal reigon above their "hoof". The dk'dk have very strick seasonal mating season, commiting acts of reproduction only in the wet season. They gather at special temples or palaces and form heaps of writhering, orgasmic masses in which each individual tries to have sex with as many others as possible, with each dk'dk getting its turn as the center of attention. Dk'dk have an unusual nervous system compossing of hollow tubes running the lengh of the body with strings of nerves branching out from them. The tubes lead to a seris of chambers within the brain-like lobes. Six tiny beings acually live in these tubes and chambers and constantly move around in them throughout the body. The INPUs (Independent Neurvous Proccessing Unit) are acually a part of the dk'dk themselves, created as independent parts of the nervous system. The INPU's jobs are to maintain health, store memories, repair damages, and control hormonal balance. The dk'dk are a herd-mentallity, meaning they do virtually everything as a group and think for the good of all. In fact, dk'dk can only survive for up to three weeks alone before dying of lonliness. Their government is a form of social communism. The dk'dk have no concept of currency, or "earning" something. Food and other nessesities are distributed evenly throughout the population, while average citizens take part in various hobbies or maniors along with hundreds of others in social activities like dancing, gaming, painting, joking, and many others. Due to their sense of heming, they decorate their building in ever-changing pattens of chromatophoric paint. Dk'dk philosophy holds that any risk that can be avoided must be avoided. They will go to tremendous efforts to not put themslves in a physically harmful situation. It took them millions of years to attempt to produce metal armor for buildings and space travel. They also never developed wheels since those could run someone over. Nowadays, they have highly advanced technology, and travel through telaportation. They utterly refuse to allow any other species near their home system, exept similarly xenophobic races like the siir, and puppeteers. They have created a synthetic race of sophonts, the youo, to act as ambassadors and representatives for themselves. They also, along with their allies, own a trading company wich sells indestructable ships among other things, in exchange for any valuble goods in the universe. They always, of course, approch new deals with caution. In 1877 A.Z., the mandrakes offered the dk'dk a new food source. The dk'dk tested the samples for 30 years in case of poisons or other potentially harmful side effects before they finally agreed to trade with mandrakes.

One explication I can imagine is that those INPU were originally some sort of stem cells stocking organs inside the neural tubes, were they were protected from the very high radiation doses they must be adapted to, as a species that loves binary blue suns. You could imagine the INPU became mobile in order to be able to get out of the tube to get to the tissues and organs that needed repair after a solar flare or a wound, and then get in again to protect itself from ionising damages.

As the major stem cell source of the dk'dk's body, INPU would have needed extremely performant self-regulation to maintain their cellular population and yet be able to multiply it manyfolds and specialise it when needed ; all this without becoming cancerous. So one step further it's logical it took over the hormonal balancing function, especially if it helped coordinating the damage repair process through the body.

As INPU cells already possessed important cell-to-cell local communications and emerging computation capabilities (to regulate themselves, the hormone balance, the healing and associated processes) they could have developped a capability for taking over temporarily the functions of the nervous system when it needed repair, and slowly over time instead of just temporarily storing the main nervous system's information they would have become independent memory storage, considerably expending the dk'dk memory (a potentially crucial point in the development of their sapience).

Whether this evolutionary speculation sounds good or not, the obvious defect of such a system is that the dk'dk would necessarily have a very slow access to their memory compared with fixed-wiring brains. But now that I think about it, it would explain why they behave extremely socially, as acting as part of a group would facilitate quick and well coordinated action and reflection despite this memory access delay. It is also a combo with the fact that, having only one manipulating organ, they would indeed need precise cooperation to create and manipulate complex tools.

It also explains why they are so fearful of harm : in case of wound or illness, the mobilisation of INPU for damage repair would temporarily erase some of the memories of a dk'dk (and probably cause some disorientation too). How unpleasant and uncivilised.

Yep, it does held together. You did conceive a fascinating and potentially realistic species !
